Admiral Aaron Stanton Merrill

Mar 26, 1890 - Feb 28, 1961

Aaron Stanton Merrill was born on Mar 26, 1890 at Brandon Hall to parents Dunbar Surget Merrill and Charlotte Brandon Stanton. He was nicknamed "Tip", and was a renowned naval officer - he was a Lt. Commander and later an Admiral.

Tip married Louise Gautier Witherbee (born Feb 24, 1890 and the daughter of Walter C. and Annie G. Witherbee) on Jan 28, 1922; she was a New York native. From what I have been able to find, they had no children.

He inherited the nickname "Tip" from his grandfather, Confederate solider, Aaron Stanton, who garnered the moniker from his father who fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe (see snippet below).

Aaron is shown on passenger records for the ship Western World, arriving in New York from Brazil on Jun 15, 1938 at the age of 47. I also found this snippet about Admiral Merrill:

Aaron Stanton Merrill was born March 26, 1890 at "Brandon Hall" Plantation, Stanton, Mississippi (near Natchez). He was the son of Dunbar Surget Merrill and Charlotte Brandon Stanton Merrill. He was named for his grandfather, a Confederate veteran. He inherited his nickname of "Tip" from his grandfather who, in turn, acquired it from his father in the "Battle of Tippecanoe".

For more on Admiral Tip Merrill, I highly suggest reading AARON STANTON MERRILL at the USS INDIANA BB-58 HOME PORT website.

Aaron Merrill (d. 1961) and his wife, Louise Witherbee Merrill (d. 1967), are buried at Natchez City Cemetery in Natchez, Mississippi.
